Your dentist has said you need a crown, and now you have to choose between zirconia, E-max and PFM. Each one looks, feels and costs different. This simple guide from Dr Agravat Dental Clinic & Implant Wellness Center explains the difference so you can decide with confidence at your visit in Thaltej, Takshashila or Rajkot.
What is a dental crown?
A crown, often called a cap, is a custom-made cover that fits over a weak or damaged tooth. It restores the tooth’s shape, strength and appearance. Crowns are commonly advised after root canal treatment, for cracked or heavily filled teeth, for worn teeth, and on top of dental implants.
The three crown types in plain words
Zirconia crowns
Made from zirconium dioxide, a very strong white ceramic with no metal. Zirconia handles heavy chewing well, so it is a popular choice for molars and implant crowns. Newer translucent zirconia also looks good on front teeth.
E-max crowns
E-max is a well-known brand of lithium disilicate glass-ceramic. It lets light pass through like natural enamel, giving the most lifelike appearance. It is often preferred for front teeth and smile makeovers.
PFM crowns
PFM means porcelain fused to metal: a metal base covered with tooth-coloured porcelain. PFM crowns have been used for decades and are a reliable, more affordable option, though they look slightly less natural than all-ceramic crowns.

| Zirconia | E-max | PFM | |

These are common choices, not rules. The final recommendation depends on the tooth, the space available, your bite and your gums.

Frequently asked questions
Which crown is best: zirconia, E-max or PFM?
There is no single best crown for everyone. Zirconia is very strong and is often chosen for back teeth, E-max gives the most natural look for front teeth, and PFM is a proven, budget-friendly option. Your dentist recommends the material after checking the tooth, your bite and your smile line.
How much does a dental crown cost in Ahmedabad?
As a guide, crowns in India range from about Rs 3,000 to Rs 18,000 or more per tooth. PFM is usually the most affordable, zirconia sits in the middle to premium range, and E-max is usually premium. You receive a written estimate after examination.
How many visits does a crown take?
Usually two: one to prepare the tooth and take a scan or impression, and one to fit the final crown once it is made. A temporary crown protects the tooth in between.
Will my crown look natural?
E-max and modern zirconia can match your natural tooth colour closely. With PFM crowns, a thin dark line can sometimes show at the gum if the gum recedes over time.
How long do crowns last?
Many crowns last 10 to 15 years or longer with good care. Brushing, flossing, regular check-ups and a night guard if you grind your teeth all help your crown last.
Do I need a crown after root canal treatment?
Usually yes for back teeth, because they take heavy chewing forces. Front teeth with enough healthy structure can sometimes be restored with a filling.
